-J.P. Howell has picked up the last couples saves for the Tampa Bay Rays and has looked fantastic. On Saturday he worked the 9th and preserved a 3-1 lead over the mets by striking out David Wright to end the game. His pedigree (Dominating pitcher for the Texas Longhorns in college and former 1st round pick) along with recent major league success (2008: 89 1/3 IP 92 Ks 2.22 ERA 2009: 34 2/3 IP 42 Ks 1.82 ERA) point to future success as closer the rest of the season.
- The Bullpen for the Washington Nationals has been a mess all year. As a team the Nationals have the fewest saves (8) and most blown saves (13). A save conversion rate of just 38% is atrocious. So National's manager Manny Acta has named Mike MacDougal in lieu of Joel Hanrahan. However, unless you are desperate for saves I don't recommend investing in MacDougal and his 6.75 ERA this year. . MacDougal has been consistently wild in his career and has a pitiful 6:9 K:BB ratio so far this year.
