Update: Mat Latos made his first spring start on Friday for the San Diego Padres, and the first batter he faced was his boyhood hero, Ken Griffey Jr. He promptly walked him, although Latos was pretty sure the pitch was a strike. When Griffey came to the plate it all came together for Latos,"When he fouled the first pitch I threw straight back, it really struck me ... I'm facing Ken Griffey Jr. And when I walked him, even though I thought the pitch was a strike, there was nothing but a smile on my face. I tip my cap to him. What a great hitter." Latos threw 2 innings and allowed one run (Griffey), one hit, and a walk.
Fantasy Impact: Latos has changed his delivery this spring so that the ball is harder to pick up by hitters. It also eases some of the torque on his body and will make his fastball work easier for him with less work. The new delivery also seems to have benefited his curve somewhat. Latos may begin the year in AAA simply to get more work, but he is someone you should keep an eye on. It may not happen this year but Latos has the talent to help the Padres ease the loss of Jake Peavy.
